I believe Sorkin made the decision. My personal theory why they generally disliked it was because journalists took umbrage with the artistic license that was taken with their profession, but the general person doesn't know/care how a real newsroom operates. Despite the critical praise that the show received for specific elements of the production, I think Sorkin was discouraged and/or disheartened by the failure of the show to be embraced and adored for its overall intention: presenting a weekly instructional school of fairy-tale journalism.
